In front of  Abu Simbel temple entrance and hewn into the side of a mountain are four gigant massive statues of the pharaoh himself. In a fit of preciseness and architectural egotism, Ramses II made the whole temple accurately angled and oriented in order that the sun’s rays would align twice a year and inlight the sanctuary room including his statue, That what we call it the miracle of sun in Ab Simbel temple, that happened on the date of his ascension to the throne (21 February) and on the date of his birthday (21 October) and illuminate all the inner sanctum of Abu Simbel temple except the god of darkness. This unbelievable sun miracle provides for a most astounding scene, which has come to be called the Sun Festival of King Ramses II.

With the passage of time, the desert sands imperceptibly shifted until the temple was all but lost to humanity. The temple was forgotten until 1813, when Swiss orientalist Jean-Louis Burckhardt found  just the smallest tip of a pharaoh's head peeking above the desert sands. Burckhardt told the Italian explorer Giovanni Belzoni about this hidden temple in the southern part of Egypt,Belzoni decide to travel to visit this uncovered temple in Egypt, but was unable to dig out an entry to the temple. Belzoni return to visit Egypt in 1817, this time, he succeeded in his attempt to enter the complex. The French expedition in Egypt left for us a stunning precise early description of  Abu Simbel temples, together with contemporaneous line paintings, You can see it in Edward William Lane's Description of Egypt (1825–1828).[2]

Local Nubian who live now in the area say that the site name is related with that 'Abu Simbel' was the name of a young local child who guided the early re-discoverers to the spot of the buried temples which he had seen from time to time in the shifting sands. Finally, they named the complex after him.

Abu Simbel temples were re-located in 1972, further up from the shoreline of Lake Nasser, which has overhanged to wear out the basis of this monolithic temple complex. That is why, the sun now strikes a day later than Ramses had originally planned, though the event itself is no less spellbinding.
