- Colossi of Memnon
The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues located on the west bank of the Nile near Luxor, Egypt. They depict Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned during the 18th dynasty (around 1386–1349 BCE). Originally, these statues stood at the entrance of Amenhotep's mortuary temple, which has since mostly eroded away.
Each statue stands about 18 meters (59 feet) tall and is carved from quartzite sandstone. They are known for their impressive scale and detailed features, showcasing the pharaoh seated on a throne with inscriptions on the front.
The Colossi gained fame in antiquity for their supposed ability to produce sound at dawn. This phenomenon was later attributed to the natural erosion of the statues, which created a resonating effect. Ancient travelers referred to this phenomenon as the "Vocal Memnon."
Today, the Colossi of Memnon remain a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors eager to see these monumental remnants of ancient Egypt's grandeur and to appreciate their historical significance.
