The Hawara Pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Amenemhat II, is an ancient Egyptian pyramid located near the town of Hawara in the Faiyum Governorate. This pyramid dates back to the Middle Kingdom (around 1850 BC) and is one of the few pyramids from this period that still retains some of its original structure.
The Hawara Pyramid is notable for its unique design, featuring a square base and a stepped structure, which is somewhat different from the more famous smooth-sided pyramids of later periods. The pyramid was originally covered in limestone casing, much of which has been removed over the centuries.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the Hawara Pyramid is its associated mortuary temple, which once contained elaborate decorations and a large number of artifacts, although many have been lost or damaged over time. The site is also home to the nearby Hawara Labyrinth, an ancient complex mentioned by historical sources, which has yet to be fully excavated.
Visiting the Hawara Pyramid offers a glimpse into Egypt’s Middle Kingdom history and the architectural developments of the time, set against the beautiful backdrop of the Faiyum Oasis.
